Educating the next generation to break the cycle of debt
Over the last year, we have been working on an exciting project that takes our goal to help communities break the cycle of debt one step further.
We recognize that the national curriculum does not provide information on money management and financial resilience, and as a result, children are left uneducated and open to the possibility of struggling with debt in the future. With this in mind, we have designed three six-minute animation videos, designed for years 10 and 11 students, to provide education on financial resilience and money management. The vision is for these videos to be shared with all schools across the country and played during form time.
The videos follow the life of a 16-year-old girl named Rozeena, who is carefully considering her career options and the potential financial implications of each. She learns about financial resilience and the importance of saving, as well as how to manage debt. Our videos feature relatable characters and scenarios that make learning fun and accessible, breaking down complex concepts into bite-sized, easy-to-understand lessons, making them and excellent educational tool for people across the nation.
We are working to get in touch with regional careers hubs and local schools to ensure as many pupils as possible have access to this resource.
Chief Executive of CIVEA, our regulatory body, Russell Hamblin-Boone, commented
“Financial education is recognised as a key feature of debt prevention and is in the national curriculum for secondary schools. While there is tremendous support for people with problem debt, the long-term solution requires a long-term strategy involving all business sectors. It is encouraging that Dukes are playing their part in supporting schools and young people to understand basic money management with an appealing series of videos”.
By offering an educational tool that covers the essentials in financial resilience and debt management, we hope to make a real difference to future generations to give them the knowledge they need to rise above the cycle of debt.
